Our Projects
The Green Sprouts Guild is involved in many aspects of the school garden and beyond 🪴. Here are some of our projects!

Automatic Irrigation System
The Alsion garden demands a lot of manual work from the students and teachers. One of the most arduous tasks is watering the plants. We aim to streamline this process by building and installing an automatic irrigation system. With the use of an Arduino board and sensors, we plan to program the system to detect moisture levels for optimal irrigation. To distribute the water we plan on constructing a channel with PVC pipes.

Beehive and Lavender Business
In the Alsion garden we have a beehive and 30 square feet of lavender growing. We plan to partner with the local farmers market and create a business to sell the organic products made from our garden.

Native Wildlife Cultivation
To make way for urban development, many local plants have been removed. The GSG plans to attract more native pollinators by planting native plants seasonally. We have planted narrowleaf Milkweed, California Poppy and Evergreen Huckleberry.

Composting
The GSG is proud to say that our garden is 100% organic. One of the reasons is because of our composting system. With our chickens producing fecal matter rich in nitrogen and our school kitchen generating food scraps the GSG created a systematic form of composting. By tracking each composting load with numbered boxes the composting system has become more efficient.
